Are you ready for a Portfolio Career?

Figuring out what to do, what it looks like, where to start and how to pay for it are all individual choices. While some participants may just need to change employers or jobs, others out there may find they need to create a role that reflects where they are at now.

You may be the type of person who is excited about a number of topics and has the capacity to move between ideas, interests and roles with some ease. You don’t like the idea of being restricted to one job, even if it’s your favourite thing. If you have trouble answering the question “what do you want to do?” then finding ways to express your multiple talents and interests in a single career or role can be difficult.

It's also possible that you might be a 'slasher', where your career is made up of a number of elements,
a package or collection of 'slashes'.

Also referred to as a 'Portfolio Career', the term reflects that one person can have multiple careers over time based on experience, interests and acquired skills. It also means that now you are setting yourself up to undertake several activities. Not all are necessarily paid jobs , but together they add up to a fulfilling and rewarding career portfolio. It could consist of part-time jobs like an interim or temporary jobs, freelancing, contract positions, self-employment and non-executive positions.

The slash approach is also a common way to transition*.  By hanging on to prior work, you can support yourself while easing your way into a new career.

The single greatest myth out there is that their is one perfect life enhancing career for you, you just need to find it. Maybe instead of this illusive search, think about the range of possibilities that reflect the multiple interests you have.

The key is to identify what you want to do more of, make room for and set it up so you can make sure it happens.

Reflect on how you see your previous interests and experience, which bits are you ready to shed and which bits do you want to keep as you make room for more of what you want ?

This website offers suggestions, activities and resources to reflect these different or eclectic pathways that you could choose to follow.

The ‘slash’ concept is teased out more in the excellent reference “The Encore Career Handbook”.
