Telltale signs you're ready to take a more creative pathway

28/8/2013

I'm a fan of 'slash careers' where your career is made up of a number of elements,  a package or collection of 'slashes'. These reflect that one person can have multiple careers over time based on experience, interests and acquired skills. The slash approach is also a common way to transition*.  By hanging on to prior work, you can support yourself while easing your way into a new career.
So for those of you who have always wanted to explore a more creative role and with the rise of online approaches to market and pull customers towards you, consider these signs that you are ready:

  • You’ve Got a Plan
  • You’ve Saved Up
  • Your Business Is Legit
  • You Know Your Resources
  • You’re Mentally Prepared

21/8/2013

Some people get up in the morning, get dressed, go to work, clock in, do their job, clock out, and go home to their family. That's the path they choose. Not so for entrepreneurs, business owners, and those who climb to the top of the corporate ladder. For better or worse, they choose a different path.
When you put your heart and soul into a career, what do you really get back out of it?

4 clues:

Making a difference
The relationships
The ride itself
The journey of self-discovery

Freedom from fear

“Fearlessness may be a gift, but perhaps most precious is [the] courage that comes from cultivating the habit of refusing to let fear dictate one’s actions.” Aung San Suu Kyi on Freedom from Fear

Courage manifests itself in many forms- this article on Aung San Suu Kyi resonates on so many levels.

Fearlessness may be a gift, but perhaps most precious is the courage acquired through endeavor, courage that comes from cultivating the habit of refusing to let fear dictate one’s actions, courage that could be described as ‘grace under pressure’ — grace which is renewed repeatedly in the face of harsh, unremitting pressure.

Where Disengagement at Work Is Worse Than Joblessness

15/8/2013

An interesting and data rich article that shows that disengagement at work is lethal. Even though unemployment can come with a loss of income, energy and vitality as well as social connections, the research states that the unemployed people studied were better off than employed who have bad managers.  While this is a German study, the importance of employee engagement and its lessons are applicable to all of us.

Don’t be put off by this title. In the spirit of fair and equitable blogging, read on as they have a good point to make.

It appears that there is an industry that has capitalised on the misconception that its ‘passion’ only that can drive your career success.

A useful reminder that it takes more that just passion,  as you need to ensure that ability, aptitude and a market need are all in the formula.

Here are five practical, effective ways to be happier at work and build a sustainable career.

1.    Analyse the data of your daily life.

2.    Find a workplace that supports your priorities outside the office

3.    Don't underestimate the power of learning.

4.    Work with inspiring people.

5.    Develop rare and valuable skills.

I'm interested in how we find ways to bring passion and curiosity into everyday lives. Embrace being restless, be inspired by others journeys and just have a go.

Above all I value the awake, curious and creative mind that cross pollinates ideas to join the dots and build new ideas.
