Finding Strength from Change

After working in administration roles, following her partner to Tokyo and Seoul in diplomatic embassy roles and having two children, Linda had experienced the best and worst that life and career change has to offer by her early 50s.

“1983 was an extraordinary year with a move from Sydney to Canberra, the death of my mother, then the birth of my first daughter and our first family move overseas. It seemed to bring up a number of emotions from my early childhood, including the death of my father at a young age and I now realise how much I actually took on in the process of change.

After many years in and out of Canberra and a divorce, I then decided to move to Melbourne and that’s when my life took another direction. This this time I seemed to deal better with the change.

I was able to take some time to experience this new city and participated in many programs - from healing to life coaching. Eight months after the move I come to the realisation that this felt right for me, the connection between the part of me with the desire to help others resonated with a passion to become a life coach.
I think I embraced this career change because of the early indicators. Meeting amazing people and connecting with others in the industry all confirmed I was on the right path.
I also had the opportunity to learn from many different mentors to further my learning, and this was inspiring. Mentors can create an environment that is neutral - you need someone who is not family or involved with your decision directly, who you can bounce ideas off.
My advice to others going through a career change is to work with your values and find your own answers, ideally with the support of others who can help in a way that helps them feel empowered in the decision-making.  Always find a mentor/coach,  someone who can lend an ear and some ideas in an unbiassed way or join a group or listen to speakers who work with changes in life.”
