From Auto Pilot to Successful Consultant

William had a successful 23 year advertising career but by the time he was 38 years old he was starting to question the value of being an ‘ad man’.

“That was making me feel restless and causing me to lose focus. Though I wouldn't have admitted it at the time, I suppose I was becoming unprofitable to the agency, so they let me go. Not wanting to go back to advertising, I started looking for something more ‘spiritually’ rewarding.

It took around a year to find a way forward, and during that time I admit I felt lost and disillusioned with life. I was broke and with bills mounting up so I had to find an opportunity that would give me the money I needed to maintain a reasonable lifestyle.

It was at that point I asked myself questions that I would never have asked at any other time. Questions like “Has my life been worthwhile?”, “What was the point my life?”, “Have I made a difference to anyone?”

These questions had a profound impact on what I went on to do, because they led me to an answer I didn’t expect – that I had no idea where I was going in life. I thought I had goals and aspirations, but in reality I was simply rolling over from one year to another.

I decided to become a business consultant and I was confident in what I was doing. But I was pragmatic enough to know that just because I claimed to be a corporate business consultant people weren't just going to throw money at me.

Proper planning is critical in anything you do, if you want to move forward fast and effectively. But I knew that it was better to take action than to wait for every ‘i’ to be dotted or ‘t’ to be crossed. So I was willing to make mistakes and, looking back, I think that was one of the biggest reasons for my success.

I had to overcome a number of business challenges. I had to create my own methodology, in a short space of time, one that would be effective, differentiate me from everyone else, and be sufficiently powerful to generate the income I had been used to getting in advertising.

Once I was clear on my goal I stayed focussed and if any idea didn’t deliver the right outcome, it was be discarded.

Along the way I had many lessons to learn and fears to overcome.

Yes, money had been a driving factor, but through consulting I have learned that it isn’t about me or the money.  Money is essential to pay the bills. But focusing on money can be a trap.  I realised that my life purpose was, and is, to be of service. Money is a by-product of that. This realization was one of the defining moments in my life.”
