From Marketing Manager to Health Coach

Marla decided to change careers when she returned to Australia after travelling with her partner and they wanted to start a family. Now, 44 she was one of the first health coaches in Australia.

“I had worked in Corporate Marketing for a large international company and loved every minute of it. But the work was not compatible with being a mum. After I had children, I freelanced in marketing for a few different companies. I struggled to find a contract with the appropriate amount of hours. Some contracts were too few hours and others were too many. It was difficult to find the right role with the hours that I wanted and with the right amount of stimulation.

I tried to start a business too, but that didn’t work out. While the business looked good on paper, on reflection the business did not match my values. I was so keen to have the right work situation that I started a company that my heart wasn’t in. I was trying too hard and was not connected to what I was selling.

I knew I needed to create a situation that would suit my lifestyle. So I spent time working out what my interests and values are and how that matched the skills I had developed. I remember going to the beach with a blank sheet of paper and working on lists of what I could do.

At the same time I received an email from an holistic nutrition school whose approach resonated with every cell of my being. They were based overseas and they were starting their first distance learning program. The rest is history and a  Health Coach was born.

My advice on how to have the biggest impact is to focus on what you are passionate about and listen to your heart.  If you are on this journey remember you don’t need to know what the answer is, you just need to be open to the answer being out there.”
