Considering the Dimensions of Change

The basic premise that resonates for me is that life change is not an orderly, step-by-step approach. Despite the fact we might want it to be, its more like an organic process.

While the process of change can be messy a creative process that includes the '4 dimensions of life change' model, can be used to understand where we are at in our own change process. We can apply this to all aspects of our lives, particularly our fundamental need for a fulfilling career.

We move through these dimensions in our own unique sequence and timeframe and it can provide a map of what we are experiencing at any given time.

We can also practice and enhance our creative skills and behaviours as these can serve as useful to anyone going through an important change - be it business or personal , and specifically through a career change.

The Seven Creative skills are*:

Preparation – Deliberately engaging in activities that help break us from our usual patterns of thought and feeling and prepare us for creative insights.

Seeing- Having the ability to discern new connections, gain fresh perspective and stay alive to new possibilities.

Using Context- Understanding how the varied environments in which we work and live influence our thoughts and behaviors, and using that knowledge to make change in our lives.

Embracing Uncertainty- Acting on the opportunities, sometimes hidden, presented by change and uncertainty.

Risk Taking- Acting without certainty of the outcome.

Discipline – Acting consistently whether or not one feels motivated.

Collaboration – Engaging with others to help one make the desired changes.

The 7 creative skills are applied to the Career Redesign Program in the following way:

  • Understanding Transition, Self Assessment ( Workshop 1) emphasizes the skills : Preparation and Seeing
  • Understanding Risk/ Challenges ( Workshop 2) emphasizes the skills : Embracing Uncertainty and Risk Taking
  • Cultivating Enablers (Workshop 2) emphasizes the skills: Using Context and Collaboration
  • Personalised Action Plan (Workshop 2) emphasizes the skill: Discipline

This approach to considering the dimensions of change and the practice of the creative skills, provides us with an exciting opportunity by applying this to the Career Redesign Program.
