The Importance of Skills Transition, Marianne’s Story

Marianne is in her early 50’s and has been through number of career transitions, now working to become a counsellor and coach. As a single mother, changing personal circumstances led to her first career change. Her approach was to stay in an industry she already had skills in and to progress from there.

“When changes occur in your personal life you need to look at the way you will deal with everything in your life including your career. My key goal was to earn a better income to support my children and still have the flexibility l needed.

In the beginning, l just went with the flow and looked at every opportunity that presented itself, some worked and others didn’t but they all had one thing in common l learned new skills from them. I knew my skills were transferable and in each role I’d enhance these skills.

But becoming a single parent and looking after 4 children under the age of 9,  definitely inhibited me making a transition at first. But I had to adjust my mindset and see everything from a different perspective if I was going to make the changes needed.

I also had to overcome many of my fears and inhibitions over the years by reflecting on my life overall. At times the financial risk would keep me awake at night but having faith that l was doing the right thing and trusting in my intuition assisted with those fears.

I have gone down many paths and taken many roads to assist me in my journey. Some good and others different, but one thing l don’t do is live with regrets. I believe everything we do will bring us closer where we would like to be and life is about learning and challenging ourselves so we can grow and develop.”
